Thái Thượng Lão Quân năm Vĩnh Thọ thứ nhất, ngày mồng bảy tháng giêng, ở cung Thái Cực, thấy chúng sinh trôi chìm ức kiếp, tội nghiệp trói buộc, đọa địa ngục rồi súc sinh, bèn giáng đất Thục, ngồi ngọc cục trao Thiên Sư. Ngài bảo: «Thân người khó được, trung thổ khó sinh, chánh pháp khó gặp. Nhiều kẻ mê tà, dâm sát tham sân, chìm địa ngục. Hãy biết tánh mạng đều nhờ Đạo mà sinh. Ngày bản mệnh, tu trai thiết tiếu, khải chúc Bắc Đẩu, Tam Quan, Ngũ Đế, Cửu Phủ, Tứ Ty; niệm danh Thất Nguyên Chân Quân thì tội tiêu, tai rửa, phúc thọ đến.» «Đại Thánh Bắc Đẩu Thất Nguyên Quân năng giải tam tai ách… đao binh ách, thủy hỏa ách.» Lão quân dạy: Bắc Thần là then chốt tạo hóa, chủ tể người thần; thân thuộc Bắc Đẩu, mệnh do thiên phủ.
