Qing zhiguai by Yue Jun (乐钧). Title alludes to hearsay ('eating with the ear')—ironic epistemology of anomaly tales. Mix of foxes, immortals, retribution, and literati self-reflection. Doctrines: 果报昭彰、狐仙济世、梦兆先机. Methods: polished classical narrative with authorial comments questioning credibility while affirming moral order. Terminology: 耳食、狐媚、果报、仙踪. Complements Liaozhai school; useful for mid-Qing merchant–gentry spirit beliefs and ethical reading of weird accounts.
Core argument: Qing ‘hearsay’ tales prove that social rumor and strange events are a diagnostic mirror of class hypocrisy, desire, and local power—truth is what people dare only say as ghost story. The text argues that the supernatural is a coded sociology.
1) When charts show strong Seal/Officer imbalance, look for social-role stress (as in 耳食 satire). 2) Treat client anecdotes as hearsay data: useful, biased, to be verified against stems-branches. 3) Use fox/ghost motifs as metaphors for hidden attachments and parasitism in relationships. 4) Practice ethical listening without superstition inflation. 5) For cultivation, purify ‘hearsay mind’—don’t let rumor qi steer decisions.
Unlike 剪灯新话’s elegant chuanqi of retribution, it is more anecdotal and socially pointed. Unlike 谐铎, it is less systematically ‘bell of harmony’ moral essay-tale hybrid.
