唐牛僧孺《玄怪录》（宋避讳亦称《幽怪录》）十卷，传奇体志怪，以构思幻设著称，名篇《杜子春》《张老》等。其道教内核最鲜明者为「试心炼丹」：杜子春三受老人资财后，于华山云台峰守药炉，戒「慎勿语」，历经将军、猛兽、水火、地狱、转生哑女诸幻，七情皆忘，独败于「爱」而失声，丹炉炸毁——道士叹「仙才之难得」。术语：「药炉」「紫焰」「黄冠绛帔」「慎勿语」「七情」「魔试」。它把内丹「炼心去欲」戏剧化为唐传奇高峰，影响后世「十魔试道」叙事。
